A shift category is a defined 24-hour staffing day. Shift categories are then divided into shift category partitions to mark the primary shift lengths for the profile. Staff Manager uses shift categories and partitions as part of the scheduling process, and each profile defines its own shift categories and partitions. For example, Profile A might have a shift category called Nursing with three 8-hour partitions named Day, Evening, and Night. The three 8-hour partitions make up the 24 hours of Profile A's staffing day.
An anchor partition is the shift category partition that designates the time when, for analysis purposes, a work day begins. While a calendar day is the 24 hours between one midnight and the next, a work day is the 24 hours from the start of the anchor partition. This is true even if the anchor partition begins in one calendar day and ends in another. For example, an anchor partition that starts at 11:00 p.m. defines a 24-hour work day that begins at 11:00 p.m. and ends at 10:59 p.m. the next day.
The time an anchor partition starts (and thus the work day) can vary from organization to organization. Schedulers set the anchor partition in Staff Manager Client Shift Category dialog box. The anchor partition is always the first Shift Category Partition in a Shift Category.
When calculating overtime hours for staffing and reports, Staff Manager uses work days to make its calculations. When counting and pushing forward patient census (such as when using the Staff Manager Client Workload Entry dialog box), Staff Manager uses calendar days.
