8. Outcomes-Driven Acuity for Administrators

Note: Your Staff Manager configuration may not include this optional application. To add this application to your configuration, contact your Clinical Consultant or Client Advocate.

Welcome to Outcomes-Driven Acuity. This application extends the capabilities of Staff Manager by automating our outcomes-driven methodology for patient acuity. Outcomes-Driven Acuity focuses on each patient’s progress (or lack of progress) toward meeting expected outcomes, and the staffing levels and skills needed to adhere to and optimize each patient’s progress through the health care facility.

Outcomes-Driven Acuity is based on Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), developed by the University of Iowa School of Nursing and licensed by Elsevier, Inc.

Outcomes-Driven Acuity is designed for use in three different environments, as described in the following table.

From Clinical Documentation Application To Outcomes-Driven Acuity Result
Manual clinical documentation Outcomes-Driven Acuity Direct Entry selection of NOC Outcomes Acuity Level
Electronic Clinical Documentation using NOC Indicators NOC Indicators imported into Outcomes-Driven Acuity and rolled up into NOC Outcomes Acuity Level
Electronic clinical documentation without NOC (for example, KBC) Observations imported in to Outcomes-Driven Acuity and mapped to NOC Outcomes Acuity Level

The Acuity menu provides access to four key functional areas.

This application requires:

An import from a clinical documentation application is optional. If an import is used, users with read/write access to Acuity may use the patient assessment page to conduct additional patient assessments. The completion of manual assessments in conjunction with a clinical documentation import may be done on a temporary basis to assist in validating the mapping of clinical documentation to Likert ratings of outcomes. In addition, patient assessment audits may be done periodically to evaluate the accuracy of the documentation, the mapping of the clinical documentation to the outcome sets and the subsequent generation of an acuity level.

Access to all profiles and locations is linked to user security. Employee security permission to either A) read Acuity data only or B) read and write Acuity data is set up in Staff Manager Client on the Permissions tab of the Employee Information dialog box.

See the Acuity section of the For Employees chapter for more information on creating, editing, and auditing patient assessments.

Outcomes-Driven Acuity and CareAware iBus

If your organization uses CareAware iBus and Outcomes-Driven Acuity, you can configure the solution to send acuity data through the iBus for use in other Cerner clinical solutions, such as Cerner Millennium. See Configuring Facility Settings: The Clinical Event Mapping Tab for more information.
